Volunteer Now For An Archaeological Dig Set for April 16
“Dig into History Day” at New Quarter Park
Volunteer now for archeological dig set for April 16, 2016
March 30, 2016
Interested volunteers are invited to join professional archaeologists and “dig into history” at York County’s New Quarter Park on Saturday, April 16. Archaeologists have been excavating the New Quarter Park site during public archaeology dig days twice a year for the past three years. The site is near an eighteenth-century slave quarter, but recent excavation revealed the cellar of a substantial brick dwelling, which may have been a tenant house. Earlier digs have produced a rich treasure of artifacts and the April dig promises more of the same.
Up to 20 volunteers can participate in this dig. There are two volunteer sessions available on Saturday, April 16: 9:30 to 12 p.m. & 1 to 4 p.m. To volunteer, send an e-mail to Fairfield@FairfieldFoundation.
No previous experience with archaeology is needed. Professional archaeologists from the Fairfield Foundation as well as certified archaeology volunteers will lead the program, instruct volunteers, and provide information about earlier discoveries.
The New Quarter dig is sponsored by the Tidewater Virginia Historical Society, the Archeological Society of Virginia, York County, and the York County Historical Museum.
New Quarter Park is located at 1000 Lakeshead Dr. near the Queen’s Lake neighborhood in York County’s Bruton District, located in the Greater Williamsburg area. Exit from the Colonial Parkway at Queens Lake. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and turn onto the first street, which is Lakeshead Drive. Follow the signs for two miles straight into the park and on to the office and parking lot.
