Summer Science Camps 2013
VIMS will be offering week-long summer marine science day-camps that will enable students to learn first-hand about the Chesapeake Bay. All camps are tailored to meet the learning stages of each age group and are free thanks to a private donor.
1st & 2nd Grade:
Sea Squirts
June 17-21, 2013
Rising 1st and 2nd grade
students will explore salt
marshes and wetlands,
investigate the
underwater world of the
Chesapeake Bay, and dip net in a variety of sandy bottom locations. Campers will be engaged through hands-on activities while learning about animals such as birds, fishes, and plants, and will have time for many creative crafts and games. To apply, complete and return application by April 1, 2013. Camp enrollment will be completed via a lottery system. 15 students maximum.
5th & 6th Grade:
Chesapeake Champions
June 24-28, 2013
Rising 5th and 6th grade
students will study and explore
freshwater, brackish, and
saltwater habitats. Campers will
participate in many hands-on
activities including canoeing and
seining in the York River, taking a boat trip to Goodwin Islands, and investigating the life in a local stream. Campers will use a variety of scientific tools including water quality equipment and microscopes to learn about the Chesapeake Bay. To apply, complete and return application and students’ statement of interest by April 1, 2013. 24 students will be selected.
Session 1: July 15-19, 2013
Session 2: July 22-26, 2013
Rising 3rd and 4th grade students will learn about ways to protect and preserve the Chesapeake Bay environment. Students will seine in the York River, use microscopes, play outdoor games, use field guides, make crafts, and complete projects that will benefit the Chesapeake Bay. To apply, complete and return application by April 1, 2013. Camp enrollment will be completed via a lottery system. 24 students maximum per session.
7th & 8th Grade:
Estuary Explorers
August 5-10, 2013
This week-long, overnight
trip to the Eastern Shore of
Virginia will allow rising 7th
and 8th grade students to
explore the Chesapeake Bay
in depth. Students will visit both the Bay and ocean side of the Eastern Shore, canoe, explore barrier islands and mud flats, take boat trips and trawl to collect animals, study dune ecology, examine marine organisms in the lab, and more! Students will stay at the VIMS Eastern Shore Laboratory dorms. Food, lodging and transportation will be provided. *Parents will be required to pick up their student on the last day of camp from the Eastern Shore. *To apply, complete and return application and students’ statement of interest by April 1, 2013. 16 students will be selected.
