VCE Master Gardener Training Program

The Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Master Gardener Program will begin accepting applications for the 2015 training class beginning August 18, 2014 and continuing through October 17, 2014. Classes will meet for three hours Monday and Wednesday mornings from January 5 through April 2, 2015. In order to become a Master Gardener, a candidate for the program must complete a 13 week classroom program as well as all assignments and quizzes. This qualifies the participant as a Master Gardener Intern. Master Gardener Interns are required to complete 50 volunteer project hours and 20 hours on the Master Gardener Help Desk to become fully certified as a Master Gardener.

The VCE Master Gardener Training Program is designed to prepare interested residents of Williamsburg/James City County to serve as volunteers dedicated to working within their community to encourage and promote environmentally sound horticulture practices. The education program focuses on concepts related to sustainable landscape management with Master Gardeners playing a key role in educating their community regarding appropriate and responsible use of natural resources and best gardening practices. Instructors are well-respected experts in their fields. Field trips offer additional enrichment to the program.

Individuals submitting an application for the Master Gardener Training Program will be contacted by program facilitators for a personal interview in late October. Applications are available at www.jccwmg.org or by calling the Virginia Cooperative Extension office at 757-564-2170. Tuition fee of $150 includes the Virginia Master Gardener Training Manual and speaker handouts.  Classes fill quickly.
