Registration Fall 2014 Open

The Virginia Cooperative Extension, James City County/Williamsburg Master Gardeners are offering to residents of the county or city a free consultation on landscape best management practices at the homeowner’s home.  During the individualized session, the homeowners and team of 3-5 VCE Master Gardeners will discuss pertinent landscape problems or questions to include, but not limited to, plant selection, placement and care; reducing use of water, fertilizers and pesticides; use of native plants, compost, and reuse of yard debris; and establishing diversified landscape practices which support habitat preservation and protect our local watersheds.  Emphasis will be on the creation and maintenance of an individualized sustainable landscape.

Applications for the Fall 2014 session will be accepted from August 15th until September 15th by visiting the VCE Master Gardener website atwww.jccwmg.org and clicking on Landscape Love, Registration Forms.  Appointments are limited.  On-site visits will be scheduled from late September throughout October.

VCE Master Gardener Training Program 

The Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) Master Gardener Program will begin accepting applications for the 2015 training class beginning August 18, 2014 and continuing through October 17, 2014. Classes will meet for three hours Monday and Wednesday mornings from January 5 through April 2, 2015. In order to become a Master Gardener, a candidate for the program must complete a 13 week classroom program as well as all assignments and quizzes. This qualifies the participant as a Master Gardener Intern. Master Gardener Interns are required to complete 50 volunteer project hours and 20 hours on the Master Gardener Help Desk to become fully certified as a Master Gardener.

 

The VCE Master Gardener Training Program is designed to prepare interested residents of Williamsburg/James City County to serve as volunteers dedicated to working within their community to encourage and promote environmentally sound horticulture practices. The education program focuses on concepts related to sustainable landscape management with Master Gardeners playing a key role in educating their community regarding appropriate and responsible use of natural resources and best gardening practices. Instructors are well-respected experts in their fields. Field trips offer additional enrichment to the program.

 

Individuals submitting an application for the Master Gardener Training Program will be contacted by program facilitators for a personal interview in late October. Applications are available at www.jccwmg.org or by calling the Virginia Cooperative Extension office at 757-564-2170. Tuition fee of $150 includes the Virginia Master Gardener Training Manual and speaker handouts.  Classes fill quickly.
