Understanding and Thinking Rural

Interested in learning more about agriculture, forestry and rural businesses in James City County? Want to help define what ‘rural’ means to the County and its essential components? Your knowledge and input is very important to the County and Board of Supervisors. Participate in one or all of the following upcoming events.

Photo Drive

What does ‘rural’ look like? Is it a field, a tractor or maybe a farmer’s market?

 

Rural can mean different things to different people and James City County is hosting a photo drive to find out what ‘rural’ means to you! Send us your original pictures of what ‘rural’ looks like and get entered in a drawing to win a donated gift basket of local County business products. The drawing will take place on Mon., July 15.

 

Photos can be taken inside or outside the County.

 

Include a caption about where the photo was taken, why the location was selected and contact information for the photographer.

 

Photo submissions are due Fri., July 12 and can be submitted digitally to:

  • 101-A Mounts Bay Rd.
  • Williamsburg, VA 23187
  • All submitted photos will be available to be viewed at www.facebook.com/jamescitycounty or at Building A of the County Government Center.
  • Photos will also be used to help define ‘rural’ in James City County as part of the discussion sessions scheduled in July.

 

Photo drive rules:

  • High quality digital photos are preferred (jpeg, maximum 2MB).
  • All photos become the property of James City County and may be used for program promotions, publications or exhibits.
  • Photos must be original and not copied or copyrighted.
  • All persons appearing must be identified. Youth aged 17 and younger must have the approval of a parent/guardian to appear in the photo.

 

 

NEXT: COME LEARN ABOUT RURAL TOPICS

We’re hosting a panel of experts from across Virginia to cover topics from forestry and keeping farms in production to agri-tourism and local foods. This panel will help us all get a better understanding of the state of ‘rural’ across Virginia and present ideas and options for the County’s rural areas.

FINALLY: LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK

Join the County and the Virginia Cooperative Extension in July at one of two discussion sessions to help us think about what ‘rural’ means to the County. We want to hear your concerns, thoughts and ideas at these sessions. Questions for thought will be available starting in late June.

Topics and questionnaires used for the Thinking Rural – Discussion Sessions will be available after July 1st:
