How long have you been teaching and teaching at WCA?
I have been teaching for 22 years, all of which have been at WCA. I taught one year in the 4 K classroom and 21 in kindergarten. I absolutely love teaching kindergarten! They are so full of life and excitement! They keep me young at heart!
What drew you to teaching, teaching at WCA and was there any particular reason you chose to teach Kindergarten?
My undergrad degree is in Political Science with the focus on Juvenile Probation. I realized that If I could help mold young people before they would need intervention, it would be a great help to them and our society. I believe God called me to teach Kindergarten. I just listened to His call!
Can you mention a project where you were able to engage the kids outside of the classroom or stories that you heard where they brought their learning home?
I had a senior student help me in my classroom one year, and now she teaches first grade at WCA! I Also two of my former students are now teaching assistants at WCA. This is such a joy for me to see them follow God’s calling in their lives and have a heart for teaching children!
What perspective have you gained from being around Kindergartener’s all day?
Robert Fulghum said it best, “Share everything, don’t hit people, put things back where you found them, clean up your own mess, say you are sorry when you hurt someone, hold hands and stick together, play and work everyday some, be aware of wonder!”
What do you want your students to be able to do when they leave your classroom- that you know will prepare them for further education and life in general?
I want their foundational academic education to be strong and for them to have a servant’s heart!
If you could ask parents to do one thing to help their children’s academic success what would it be?
Families are so busy now a days that they need to make it a priority to spend time with their children and of course READ, READ, READ!
Do you have a favorite quote that inspires you and/or your class that you post, read, share or just meditate on?
Deuteronomy 32:2. “Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.”
Are you from Williamsburg? If not, where are you from, what brought you here?
My parents brought me to Williamsburg when I was 18 months old. I attended Matthew Whaley, Rawls Byrd, Jamestown Academy, James Blair, Lafayette, and Christopher Newport University.
