How long have you been teaching and teaching at DJ Montague Elementary? This is my 7th year teaching. I started my teaching career at Clara Byrd Baker and then moved back to my hometown in California where I taught 2nd and 5th grade for 5 years. And am now happy to be back in Williamsburg teaching at DJ Montague for the first time and am loving the Mustang spirit.
What perspective have you gained from being around children daily? I have learned that each day is a wonderful gift. I love the joy and enthusiasm that students bring to each day and new experience. The strength and willingness to take risks, attack a new challenge, and try something new is inspirational and one of the many reasons I truly enjoy coming to school each day.
What do you want your children to be able to do when they leave your classroom – that you know will prepare them for further education and life in general? I want my students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, understanding that there is often more than one way to approach and solve a problem. I want students to leave my classroom with a love of learning and be proactive learners, something that they will take with them and carry into adulthood.
If you could ask parents to do one thing to help their children’s academic success what would it be? Talk to your child daily about their school day, whether in the car on the way to the grocery store or around the dinner table. Ask about school – both successes and failures from the day. Show your child that you care about what he/she is learning and that the education that he/she is getting is important and essential. It is the child’s job to be a learner and our job as teachers and parents to support that and cheer them on in the process.
Are you from Williamsburg? If not, where are you from, what brought you here? I am originally from Irvine, California (Southern California). I had the great privilege of attending the College of William and Mary where I studied History and Elementary Education. I student taught at Clara Byrd Baker in 2nd Grade and was then hired on to teach 2nd grade.
Williamsburg’s Choice ~ Teacher of the Month will return in the Fall. Voting will resume in September! Thank you to our wonderful teachers and our fantastic partners – School Crossing, The Virginia Gazette and Williamsburg Smiles.
