Senior Center of York – August Activities and Events
A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in August. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. The Senior Center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rte. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Senior Center is closed on all county holidays. Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs are offered free of charge unless otherwise noted. New-After Hours! “Jam-Along & Sing-Along,” Mondays, August 15 and August 29, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Come join us for a fun time and bring a friend! This is a chance for seniors to make music by playing an instrument, singing, or just enjoying listening to others on the second and fourth Mondays of each month! Culture Day – “York County in Wartime” – Wednesday, August 17, at 1 p.m. Historian Frank Green will give us an overview of the history of York County during World War II, from before the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 to Japan’s surrender ending the war in 1945. Mr. Green has researched the topic through the documents of writer Helen Jones Campbell, the National Park Service, and from various York County officials. Indoor Cornhole – Monday, August 22, at 1 p.m. Join us for a friendly game of Cornhole! It is believed this game originated in Germany and was rediscovered in Kentucky over 100 years ago. Whether you call it corn toss or bean bag toss, come have fun playing this exciting game! Please register at the front desk byThursday, August 18, so we can organize teams.
AARP Driver Safety Program – Monday, August 22, and Tuesday, August 23. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will be held Monday, August 22, from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m., and Tuesday, August 23, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for the two-day program is $15 for members of AARP and $20 for non-members. Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone or by mail. NOTES: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no “behind the wheel” driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. August Birthday Bash – Friday, August 26, at 1 p.m. Come to the Senior Center and hear the amazing vocals of Solo Artist Billy Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell will perform a medley of songs including popular tunes from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. Remember, you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to come join the fun! July and August birthdays will be recognized at this event. Cake and beverage will be served.
Health Day – “Livestrong at the YMCA” – Wednesday, August 31, at 12:45 p.m. “Livestrong at the YMCA” is a new free program for adult cancer patients and survivors. Medical studies have shown that moderate levels of appropriate physical activity can reduce fatigue, boost self-esteem, and improve muscle strength and physical endurance in individuals following cancer treatment. In addition to learning about this new program, Robin Moon, the Director of Health and Well-Being at the Tabb Victory YMCA, will talk about the benefits of physical activity and other YMCA programs. Computer Lab General Use. From now until late September, computers in the Senior Center’s Computer Lab will be reserved for computer classes on Tuesdays. The computers are available for general use Mondays and Wednesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Patrons must sign in at the front desk to use the computers.

“Antiques: Hampton Roads Style & Beyond” – Wednesday, September 7, at 1 p.m. Do you know the value of your antiques? Gail Wolpin and Bill Welch of the Phoebus Auction Gallery, a local gallery with a worldwide audience, will come talk about antiques and what is popular on the collectors’ market and why. Ms. Wolpin, owner of the gallery, and Mr. Welch will also discuss values, downsizing, and the process of how to profit from various items. Participants can bring in one small item for an auction estimate of the item’s current value. Please sign up at the front desk by Wednesday, August 31.
