FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO THE BALLROOM: MUSIC AND IDENTITY DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
A program on music of the Civil War era will be presented Monday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St. Admission is free and no tickets are needed.
Jim Davis, professor of Musicology at the State University of New York at Fredonia, discusses how music was a subtle yet effective force that helped to create a sense of shared identity in the socio-military communities of soldiers and civilians during the American Civil War. The program is presented in conjunction with the William and Mary Department of Music as part of its Music in American Culture lecture series.
Professor Davis is the author of “Music Along the Rapidan: Civil War Soldiers, Music, and Community During Winter Quarters, Virginia” (University of Nebraska Press) and “Bully for the Band! The Letters and Diary of Four Brothers in the 10th Vermont Infantry Band” (McFarland).
