Outstanding Service to Seniors Award
Williamsburg Landing Outstanding Service to Seniors Award – Nominations due Mar 28, 2019. Do you know an individual or organization that has shown outstanding service to local seniors? The Williamsburg Landing Fund at the Williamsburg Community Foundation provides for an annual monetary “Outstanding Service to Seniors Award” in honor of Older Americans Month.
When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns grew. In April 1963, President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of Senior Citizens designated May as “Senior Citizens Month,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.”
Williamsburg Landing is proud to support the “Outstanding Service to Seniors Award” in honor of Older Americans Month. In 2017, a $1,000 award was split between the Hospice House & Support Care Williamsburg Guild Volunteers and recipient, Rita Smith, retired director of Williamsburg Area Faith in Action. Last year the $1,000 award was presented to William S. Massey, President/CEO, Peninsula Agency on Aging.
The “Outstanding Service to Seniors Award” will be given annually to an individual or organization that excels at service to seniors in Greater Williamsburg. Key factors in the selection of a winner include a nominee’s accomplishments and impact on the community.
