Opera in Williamsburg – Panel Discussion of Don Giovanni – October 29
We will have a panel on “Opera and Don Giovanni” by Laura Alley and Richard Cordova, the stage director and conductor of Opera in Williamsburg’s Don Giovanni respectively, and Naama Zahavi-Ely, founder and artistic director of the company. The panel is sponsored by the Department of Classical Studies of the College of William and Mary, and will take place on Thursday October 29 at 4 PM at Morton 220 (near the Muscarelle Museum), free and open to the public.
The genre of Opera was created in Renaissance Florence as a revival of Greek Drama (which also was sung and danced). Like Greek drama, Opera often deals with mythological stories and figures, whether of Classical mythology (like Mozart’s Idomeneo) or later one. Don Giovanni with his irresistibility and his compulsive pursuit of women is arguably a mythical figure. Creating a specific production of a beloved classic like Mozart’s Don Giovanni is a welcome challenge, and our team will be happy to share their insights of the work and the production with the Williamsburg audience.
