New year, New you, New home by Rebecca Young

Well it’s that time of year again! We start every year with wanting to de-clutter our lives; eating out less, eating healthier foods, losing weight, spend more time with the people we love, but what about our homes? Why wait until “spring cleaning” to finally get your place organized? Let’s start 2013 off right by not just improving yourself but also your home.
One of the areas in the home that gets the most cluttered………CLOSETS!!!! So let’s get ORGANIZED!
Closet- A small room or cupboard used for storing things. Not a place to cram, stuff and throw all the things we don’t know where to put or a place for the things we don’t feel like putting away.
Let’s start with the easier items: accessories! Hats, belts, scarves, shoes. Well for some, shoes may be the most difficult! The next step is purging your clothing. This step is usually the most difficult, especially with women. We want to hold on to certain outfits for many different reasons- we wore it for a special ceremony or a memorable occasion, we wore it 5 years ago and ‘possibly this year I’ll wear it again’. The excuses can go on and on but the answer is, it’s time to LET GO! We need to cleanse our closets in order to move on from past experiences, past weight issues and even past decades, now is the time to wear what we can fit and to get ready for the oncoming year.
I divide my items into 4 piles: keep, throw away, donate or sell. One of the best things about this process is if you can’t use it, it will be appreciated by someone else! Now is the fun part! As you go through each group, try each item on, you can have your own private fashion show. If an item does not fit- then it’s out, no questions asked! (I do recommend if you are working towards a weight loss goal and you have that one special outfit you want to fit into again, keep it as your goal outfit.) If something does fit, really look at it and decide if you will ever wear it again. If there is a chance you won’t then it is out. Once you have decided what is staying you can buy cute baskets or bins to hold your hats, belts and scarves. I use a hanging shoe rack which keeps all my shoes up of the floor and from taking up too much extra space. Organize your hanging clothes; work clothes, dressy shirts, dress pants, skirts, and dresses. You can also organize by season. That is what’s so great about this process and the final touches; it is what is best for you!
I recommend you go through your closets not just once a year but multiple times. When the season changes is great time to get in there and clean out your past and make way for your future. This process can take time and be difficult for some people who have a hard time letting go. My recommendation is to have a friend come over. Someone who will be completely honest with you and tell you, ‘that outfit has GOT to GO!’ Before you can organize your things you need to make room for them and get rid of the clothing you no longer can fit into, things that are out of style or items that you haven’t even worn in years.
I hope these quick tips help you get ready for the coming year and for any extra help on cleansing closets or other parts of your home, you can give me a call!
Rebecca Young is my name and organizing is my game! I have been organizing since I was a child and have loved helping others along the way. Born and raised here in Williamsburg, I grew up wanting to be a teacher and started on that path for the first 10 years of my working career. For the last 6 years though I have been working in the health field which has helped me to realize I want to help others not just on the surface but on a deeper level. This all starts though with making positive changes. I have helped others organize anything from finances to closets and businesses to homes. It is my goal to help others realize they can be stress free with just a few hours of putting order into their lives. Call me today and we can work together to beautify your life and the beauty within.
