If you’re not one, you know one! Tenacious women, from 1619 to today, are celebrated June 8-9 as Jamestown Settlement presents “MY TENACITY!” with a weekend of female musicians, dancers, spoken-word artists, character portrayals, children’s activities and more from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a special ticketed after-hours outdoor concert on Saturday June 8th from 6 to 10 p.m.
This special ticketed nighttime outdoor concert, Tenacious Women Concert features performances by Davina & The Vagabonds, the Truetone Honeys and award-winning vocalist Desirée Roots.
A Look at the Lineup
6 p.m. – Doors Open
7 p.m. – Davina & The Vagabonds, a high-energy blues ensemble that brings a new spin on an old sound with 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals.
8 p.m. – Truetone Honeys, featuring three classically trained female vocalists combined with incredibly talented jazz musicians to create a caliber of performance long lost in today’s live music scene.
8:30 p.m. – Desirée Roots, an East Coast favorite and award-winning vocalist with a powerful yet controlled, lush voice performing hits from the queens of Motown.
Come hungry! There will be food from local favorite food trucks and drink from local breweries and winery. Doors open at 6 p.m. with concessions available for purchase from local favorite food trucks Matchsticks BBQ Co. and FoodaTude..Food with Attitude, The Virginia Beer Company, Alewerks Brewing Company, Billsburg Brewery and Williamsburg Winery.
Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for lawn seating. Coolers, food and outside beverages are not permitted.
A separate ticket to this evening event must be purchased. Attendees can choose from a General Admission ticket for $30, which includes two complimentary drink tickets, or a VIP ticket for $75, which includes access to a private seating area, two complimentary drink tickets and heavy hors d’oeuvres. Throughout the day on Saturday June 8th the Mall Stage, host Lee Anne Rose, who has spent the last 25 years bringing women’s history to life through historical interpretation, will bridge the centuries to introduce the women of “MY TENACITY!” Live entertainment features performances by Meredith Schramm, award-winning American Indian Hoop Dancer; Dance or Die!, a lively 18th-century dance act of colonial merriment; and drums and dancers from ACT Dance Theatre of Atumpan, a nonprofit arts education organization specializing in African culture.
In the Robins Foundation Theater, enjoy a variety of dance and musical acts featuring Time for 2 Violin & Cello Duo, with 14-year-old violinist, Kearston Gonzales, and 12-year-old cellist, Kendall Gonzales; Claves Unidos, with an energetic and rhythmic journey through a coming-of-age tale demonstrating the importance of the African influence on music and dance; and Caroline Scruggs on the theremin, with a mix of both original songs and recognizable tunes as never heard before.
Live performances will enchant and educate in the Gazebo, featuring American Indian tales with Felicity Meza-Luna, story and song with Sylvia Tabb Lee, and tenacious women character portrayals from Darci Tucker as Alice Grierson and Sheila Arnold as Fannie May Hamer. Families can also enjoy face painting, period games and crafts, community tables and activities, plus perfume-distilling demonstrations with Rebecca Suerdieck.

10 a.m./1 p.m. – Character portrayal by Darci Tucker as Alice Grierson, a counselor and advocate for the officer’s wives, laundresses and African-American troops of the 10th Cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers.”
10:45 a.m./1:45 p.m. – Character portrayal by Sheila Arnold as Fannie Lou Hamer, an American voting rights activist and civil rights leader.
11:30 a.m./2:30 p.m. – American Indian tales with Felicity Meza-Luna.

ABOUT JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT: Jamestown Settlement features expansive exhibition galleries and films that connect visitors with the lives of the Powhatan, English and west central African cultures that converged at 17th-century Jamestown, and historical interpretation in outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, 1607 English ships and colonial fort. Jamestown Settlement is a stage for special exhibitions, events and programs in conjunction with the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution, honoring the 400th anniversary of key historical events in Virginia in 1619. The “TENACITY: Women in Jamestown and Early Virginia” special exhibition, a legacy project of the 2019 Commemoration, explores captivating and little-known stories of Powhatan Indian, English and African women in 17th-century Virginia, and is accompanied this year by more than a dozen public lectures, special events and performances.
Jamestown Settlement is located on State Route 31 near the Colonial Parkway in James City County, just southwest of Williamsburg.
Admission: Residents of York County, James City County and the City of Williamsburg, including College of William and Mary students, receive free admission with proof of residency. All daytime performances, activities and speaker presentations during this special event are included with museum admission: $17.50 for adults, $8.25 for ages 6-12, and free for children under 6. A value-priced combination ticket with the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown is $26.00 for adults and $12.50 for ages 6-12. A separate ticket is required to attend the evening concert and can be purchased at historyisfun.org/mytenacity.
