Maya Angelou – April 15, 2014
Renowned writer Maya Angelou to give talk at William & Mary
Several organizations at the College of William and Mary have come together to bring poet and author Maya Angelou to campus for a talk on April 15 during “I Am W&M” week, the college announced Thursday. “We, as students, have grown up reading her poetry and hearing her story, so the opportunity to have Maya Angelou visit campus and speak to the William and Mary community is extremely exciting. As an author, poet and civil rights advocate, she has transformed her personal adversity into inspiration for others,” Chase Koontz, president of the Student Assembly, said in a statement. Angelou, 85, is the author of “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” which was nominated for a National Book Award and spent two years on a New York Times bestseller list, as well as more than 30 other best-selling works. She has received numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts and the Lincoln Medal, and is also well known as a civil rights activist, journalist, and actor in and director of numerous film, TV and theater productions. She read one of her poems at the inauguration of U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1993.
