SCREENING MAMMOGRAMS

A screening mammogram is a type of X-ray that helps detect early breast cancer in patients who have no signs or symptoms. A screening mammogram is a routine test done every year for women starting at the age of 40 and is fully covered by insurance under the Affordable Care Act. If you do not have insurance, there are resources available to help you cover the costs. The Komen Breast Care Helpline can help you find low-cost options in your area.

For women with a first-degree relative (mother or sister) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it is recommended they start receiving yearly screening mammograms 10 years prior to the age their relative was diagnosed. Age is the most significant factor for women who develop breast cancer; however, genetics does play a role. Women who are at a higher risk for breast cancer should have a breast MRI in addition to a screening mammogram. Your doctor will help you decide if this is right for you.
