Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio at James City County Library – Fun for Kids!
Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio
Come enjoy this creative kid’s space at the James City County Library’s children’s section. It is a completely engaging space that combines play and learning.
The Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio has interactive structures to keep little hands and minds busy in a “children’s museum” type style. It will make you rethink how a library can allow your kids to interact and still learn.
“Children begin learning literacy skills from birth — well before they even understand what reading and writing are,” Sandy Towers, Williamsburg Regional Library’s Youth Services Director explains, “Play is the chief learning activity of preschool children, and toys and games are their first reading tools. Essentially, play is the most important ‘work’ of children.”
Kids will find air tubes, magnetic ramps, and other opportunities to explore kinetic energy, friction, and inertia, but don’t worry they will never guess they are learning – but they are! There will be a projection wall, LEGO wall, microscope, and virtual reality station all ready to jump start their imaginations. A town area that will include a market with toy groceries, a veterinarian and a house with furniture and accessories so kids can play over and over again coming up with new stories each time.
“To enrich and improve the library experience for neurodiverse children, WRL created a custom-built sensory corner inside the Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio at the James City County Library. This busy children’s museum-like space can sometimes be overstimulating, so the new area provides a quiet place where children can look at a calming giant bubble tube, touch TAP-TAP lights and light ropes, play with fidget toys, and relax in a quieter, lower light area. Other sensory-related items at WRL include sensory bags available to borrow while inside a library building, as well as sensory play items available for checkout from the Learning to Go collection!” WRL News Winter 2024, Sandy Towers, Interim Library Director
