Toddler Assistant Teacher

Williamsburg Montessori is seeking a Toddler Assistant Teacher to begin immediately.
The Toddler Assistant Teacher works as the assistant teacher in the full-day toddler program. The Assistant Teacher helps to create a positive learning environment guided by the Montessori Toddler philosophies and curriculum. The Assistant Teacher communicates well with the other teachers in the classroom and ensures that the classroom environment facilitates a peaceful atmosphere for learning. The hours are 7:30am-4:30pm, Monday through Friday.
Job Specific Responsibilities:
Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing daily classroom activities and events guided by the Montessori Toddler philosophy:
- Interact in a respectful and caring manner with the children by actively participating in their play and learning.
- Change diapers and assists with toileting and hand washing.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for the children through general housekeeping.
- Prepare food for snacks and assist with lunch routines.
- Supervise children in the classroom, playground, and during nap time.
- Ensure that all state and local requirements are met for the supervision of the children.
Communicate well and frequently with the Lead Teacher:
- Assist the Lead Teacher in identifying each child’s developmental strengths and challenges; allow the Lead Teacher to be the primary contact for parent communication.
- Assist the Lead Teacher in updating and maintaining student information in for timely communication with parents.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher or the Head of School.
- Attend scheduled Parent/Teacher meetings and required sixteen hours of professional development per year.
- Participate in first aid and other training required by State Licensing, AMS, or the school.
Experience and Qualifications:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent plus an expressed interest in working with children. Past experience in childcare is preferred. The assistant teacher must have an interest in learning more about Montessori philosophy along with furthering their Montessori education.
Other Considerations:
The teacher must be able to perform light physical work and have the ability to lift and carry children weighing approximately 30 to 45 pounds. The teacher will be required to bend, crouch, lift, kneel and other physical activity as they address the needs of the student (e.g. diaper changing, toileting, cleaning, etc.). The person must be comfortable being outdoors in a variety of temperatures to supervise playground activities. The person in this position is responsible for maintaining performance under pressure, and handling stress in a manner that is acceptable to others and to the organization. Working conditions are relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions.
