January Kids Make a Difference – Adam Godwin
Congratulations to our Dec./Jan. winner, Adam Godwin! Adam is a sophomore at Warhill High School. He has chosen to give his donation to FISH. Read his story below:
To become an Eagle Scout, a major service project must be completed. For my project I held a Jean Drive to benefit the local FISH Clothing Closet. Every kid deserves a good pair of jeans and Billie Johnston, FISH Clothing Closet Director, told me that often they do not have jeans available in kid sizes. I decided to hold a Jean Drive with a personal goal of 500 pairs of jeans. I spent the summer planning by meeting with the principals of several WJCC schools to make sure my idea was feasible. Then I made a formal proposal to the Colonial Virginia Council for scouting.
I designed a flyer to promote the Jean Drive and got it approved by the WJCC Central Office. Then I sent email to all of the school principals and the senior administrative assistants to explain about the Jean Drive and to ask permission to place collection boxes in each school and to promote the drive on each school’s morning announcements. Fourteen out of fifteen schools participated.
The whole process took a lot of time. First the flyers had to be printed, and counted into sets of 25. I designed drop boxes for each school, made posters, and set up collection spots. Scouts helped me decorate the boxes and deliver them to the schools. Then for two weeks we made trips to different schools to pick up the donations. The Jean Drive was a great success. I was able to deliver 964 pairs of jeans to the FISH Clothing Closet.
I heard from some parents who said their kids were excited to help by donating jeans. I hope that means some kids will want to do their own projects in the future. Anyone who wants to donate jeans to FISH, can do so any time. Just tell them that Adam sent you!
UPDATE from Adam: “I wanted to tell you that the final number of jeans for my drive was 1,012. That is because after the drive ended I kept getting calls from people to pick up more jeans. It was like the whole county wanted to help!”
