Storytelling Family Day
Jamestown Settlement, a museum of 17th-century Virginia history and culture, presents “Storytelling Family Day” August 3, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.. Families will delve into a variety of interactive programs from storytelling sessions to make-and-take crafts.
Storytelling sessions will be offered throughout the day
10 a.m. and 2 p.m. – Indigenous stories by Felicity Meza-Luna (Lakota)
11 a.m. and 3 p.m. – African American stories by Sheila Arnold
Interpretive Program
1 p.m. – At the ships’ pier, visitors can discover the story of the European voyage to Virginia in 1607. Through the exploration of five fruits – apples to berries – that sailors and passengers would have encountered on the 144-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
Crafts
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – “My Day at Jamestown Settlement” Storytelling craft is designed for preschoolers. Kids will color picture magnets (a yehakin, ship, deer, fishing net, armor, map and more) to take home to tell stories about their museum adventure.
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – Journal craft will build on the traditions of Indigenous, European and African cultures. Children will examine stories from cultures from around the globe to see how different people have shared their stories. They will create their own adventure by writing a story on paper and binding those into a journal. Craft materials will be provided.
Admission
As part of the “Explore with Your Library Card” program in partnership with Chesapeake Public Libraries, visitors who show their Hampton Roads library card receive free admission to Jamestown Settlement on August 3.
Residents of JCC, York County and City of Williamsburg, including William & Mary students, receive free admission with proof of residency. Parking is free.
“Storytelling Family Day” is included with admission to Jamestown Settlement: $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for ages 6-12.
