James City County Opens State-of-the-Art Outdoor Fitness Court® at Warhill Sports Complex

James City County has unveiled its newest addition to public health initiatives with the opening of a state-of-the-art outdoor Fitness Court® at the Warhill Sports Complex, located at 4900 Stadium Rd. This innovative fitness facility is the first of its kind in the Tidewater region and the ninth in Virginia.

This project is part of a broader partnership between James City County, the National Fitness Campaign, and Aetna®, aimed at promoting accessible fitness opportunities throughout the community. The construction of the Fitness Court was made possible through a grant from the Williamsburg Health Foundation, which seeks to enhance free access to high-quality workout spaces and provide equitable exercise opportunities for all.

The Fitness Court® is an outdoor gym featuring seven exercise stations that allow participants to perform bodyweight workouts tailored to their individual fitness levels. Designed for people aged 14 and older, the facility is fully adaptable for all abilities. Users can further enhance their experience by downloading the free Fitness Court App, which serves as a digital wellness coach, offering guided workouts and wellness tips.

The addition of the Fitness Court comes as part of an effort to address local health concerns. According to data from the Williamsburg Health Foundation, residents of the Greater Williamsburg area face health challenges related to obesity, type 2 diabetes, aging, and social isolation—issues that can be improved through lifestyle changes and regular physical activity. Deanna Van Hersh, President and CEO of the Williamsburg Health Foundation, emphasized that the Fitness Court aligns with the Foundation’s mission to increase physical activity and social connection within the community.

“Aetna is committed to the health and wellness of the members and communities we serve,” said Bill Deal, market head of public and labor at Aetna. “The Fitness Court provides a fun and engaging way to help people take control of their health journey.”

Carla Brittle, Tourism & Centers Administrator for James City County, added, “This fitness facility offers a free, convenient opportunity for parents to work out while their children are involved in activities at the park. By eliminating barriers like cost and time, we can help more people in our community stay active and improve their overall health.”

Founder of the National Fitness Campaign, Mitch Menaged, applauded James City County’s leadership in promoting wellness. “James City County is leading the charge in Virginia by providing accessible health and wellness opportunities for their residents. The Fitness Court is a tremendous addition to the community.”

The public is encouraged to attend the opening ceremony and take part in demonstrations to learn how to use the equipment. For more details about James City County Parks & Recreation, visit jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation.
