Have you ever wondered how archaeologists work, what they find, and how they know what they know? This 50-minute hands-on excavation gives children a brief introduction to archaeological digging, screening, and lab work. Get ready to grab a bucket and a trowel and get dirty!

Things to Know Before You DIG!

This is a real archaeological dig on the site of an 18th-century store so we recommend our archaeologists-in-training be between the ages of 5 and 16 to get the most out of this experience. Younger archaeologists may choose to dig in a specially prepared dig box with its own buried treasures. Parents must remain with their children as they dig, but they do not require a ticket.

Daily Schedule:
(All sessions are weather permitting)

9:30 a.m.

Our first session of the day only requires Colonial Williamsburg Admission, it does not require a separate ticket. The first 20 participants in line at the dig site adjacent to the Prentis Store will be accepted.

10:30 & 11:30 a.m.,
1:30 & 2:30 p.m.

The DIG! sessions scheduled for these times require both Colonial Williamsburg Admission AND a separate free ticket available at any of our ticketing locations. There are only 20 tickets available per session and they’re only available on the same day, so be sure to get yours early to reserve your spot.

3 p.m.

If you’re energized by “DIG!”, return at 3:00 each afternoon for “DUG!“, a rotating schedule of activities that reveal archaeology’s cleaner side. DUG! does not require a ticket.
