FREE Pipa Solo Concert (Traditional Chinese Instrument) – July 15

Mengxia-Concert-pipa

Come and listen to the enchanting sounds of pipa (琵琶), a traditional Chinese music instrument, played by WMCI Volunteer Teacher Mengxia Zhang. With over 2000 years of history in China, the lute-like pipa is shaped like half of a pear and takes its name from “pi” and “pa”, meaning “plucking forward” and “plucking backward”, respectively. Mengxia Zhang is currently a graduate student at Beijing Normal University majoring in Musicology, specializing in playing and teaching traditional Chinese musical instruments– specifically the pipa and ruan. She has won many national awards in China and participated in numerous international exchanges, including the 2011 Cofucius Institute Performance Tour.  FREE and Open to the Public!  www.wm.edu/sites/confuciusinstitute/
