Free films at the library – March 2014- Women’s History Month

MARCH‘S THURSDAY AFTERNOON FILM SERIES FEATURES FILMS CELEBRATING WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Williamsburg Regional Library’s Thursday Afternoon Film Series in March features movies about Famous Ladies. A short documentary will precede the feature film starting at 1:00 p.m. The movies begin at 2 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, 515 Scotland St.  Admission is free and reservations are not required. Hatshepsut: In Search of Egypt’s Great Queen (1997, 1:00-1:50) – This documentary tells the story of Queen Hatshepsut, one of early Egypt’s most successful Pharaohs.

Salome (1953, 2:00-3:45) – Rita Hayworth plays the biblical femme fatale who used her  seductive wiles and sinuous dancing to seek revenge on John the Baptist. Stewart Granger costars under the direction of William Dieterle.

DNA: The Secret of Photo 51 (2007, 1:00-2:00) – A NOVA documentary on the career of Rosalind Franklin, a brilliant female scientist whose work in X-Ray crystallography provided Watson and Crick with crucial information on the structure of DNA.

Madame Curie (1943, 2:10-4:15) – In this romanticized biopic, Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon play Marie and Pierre Curie who in 1903 won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of the element Radium. Mervyn LeRoy directed this film which was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor and Actress.

Nellie Bly: Around the World in 72 Days (1997, 1:00-2:00) –  Nellie Bly was a pioneer in the field of  investigative journalism but her primary claim to fame is the trip she took around the world in 1890 in an attempt to beat the record set by fictional character Phileas Fogg in Jules Verne’s novel, “Around the World in 80 Days.”

Legend of Suriyothai (2001, 2:10-4:30, Rated R for Violence, In Thai with English Subtitles) – This sprawling, opulent  production tells the story of 16th century Queen Suriyothai of Siam who is renowned in the history of Thailand for the many sacrifices she made in the defense of her country.

The Secret War: Christine Granville, Polish Spy (2012, 1:00-2:00) – This documentary covers the exploits of Christine Granville, a remarkably brave, daring and successful espionage agent in occupied Poland and France during the Second World War.

Evita (1996, 2:10-4:25, Rated PG) – This musical based on the life of Eva “Evita” Peron stars Madonna, Antonio Banderas and Jonathan Pryce. Based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular Broadway production, this film version was directed by Alan Parker.
