First Assembly Day Commemoration

On Saturday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 30, 2014, Historic Jamestowne will commemorate First Assembly Day, the anniversary of the first legislative assembly in English North America.

On Saturday, July 26, guests are invited to join an interactive presentation at the Historic Jamestowne Memorial Church, which was erected on the site of the original church where the 1619 General Assembly met. The program times will be 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the church. Led by living history interpreters, guests will be able to take roles and participate in several short “scenes,” representative of the events that occurred during the historic first meeting of the assembly.

On Wednesday, July 30, a special program held at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m., inside the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center Theater, will allow visitors to meet three people from Jamestown’s past who will share stories of Virginia’s government during the colony’s earliest years. John Pory, speaker of the first General Assembly; John Rolfe, a member of Governor Yeardley’s Council and one of the counselors at the first assembly; and a female resident of the colony will discuss with “new arrivals” (visitors) the day’s events during a recess of the 1619 assembly. Each program lasts approximately 45 minutes.

From 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., inside the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center, a staff member from the Virginia House of Delegates will be distributing free children’s materials on Virginia government.
