Yorktown Resolves
July 18 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
In observance of the 250th anniversary of the 1774 York County Resolves, a special interactive program offers an evening of colonial politics while exploring the origins of the Virginia Bill of Rights and our nation’s shared colonial history. In 1774, Virginia was divided between those who wished to stay loyal to the British monarchy and those who wished to rebel against the taxes on tea and other imported goods.
6:30 p.m. – Historian Jim Gallagher will portray patriot Thomas Nelson, Jr.. Gallagher will reenact the speech Nelson gave 250 years ago, encouraging citizens to protest the British crown and its policies. Audience members will take part in reading portions of the Resolves to rebel against the taxes on tea and other imported goods.
Outdoors in the museum’s artillery amphitheater, participants will consider choices in the face of liberty: Are you FOR or AGAINST the Resolves? Perhaps, you wish to remain NEUTRAL? Will you sign the Articles of Association and unite with the rebels in dressing the “Liberty Pole”?
The evening will also include live music. Admission is free and open to the public. More info
In partnership with the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission, the event is hosted by the Williamsburg-Yorktown American Revolution Round Table and the Yorktown Commemoration Committee.
