January’s theme: Beautiful Music (Movies with Great Musical Scores)

Jan. 2: Lawrence of Arabia (1962) PG – Peter O’Toole plays T.E. Lawrence, the British soldier who was able to unite the various Arab tribes and lead them against the Turkish army during the first World War. This magnificent film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning seven including Best Original Score for Maurice Jarre’s haunting musical score. 3hrs 47min (NOTE: The film will be starting at 1 p.m. today) 

Jan. 9: The Magnificent Seven (1960) NR – A small village in Mexico hires seven disparate gunmen to protect it from a rampaging group of bandits. Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, and Charles Bronson star under the direction of John Sturges. Elmer Bernstein’s Oscar-nominated musical score is a highlight of the film and was later featured in Marlboro cigarette commercials. 2hrs 8min 

Jan. 16: Out of Africa (1985) PG – Legendary composer John Barry won the Oscar for his lush, romantic musical score in this sweeping bio-film about writer Karen Blixen’s life and love affairs in pre-World War One Africa. Sydney Pollack directed with Robert Redford and Klaus Maria Brandauer costarring. 2hrs 41min 

Jan. 23: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (1966) R  – In the midst of the American Civil War, three rivals go in search of a fortune in gold coins. Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, and Lee Van Cleef star in Sergio Leone’s popular “Spaghetti Western.” Ennio Morricone’s famous musical score became a popular album that stayed on the bestseller charts for over a year. 2hrs 58min 

Jan. 30: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) PG-13 – In 1930s Mississippi, three convicts escape a chain gang and go in search of some buried loot, having picaresque adventures along the way. The Coen brothers directed with George Clooney, John Turturro, and Holly Hunter starring. The bluegrass soundtrack by T Bone Burnett became more popular than the film, winning numerous awards and selling five million copies. 1hr 47min
