Now in its 21st year, the Throwback Thursday Film Series screens a variety of classic movies for an adult audience. October: Halloween Spooktacular! 

October 31: Two Shows Today 

2:00 pm Newhart: “Take Me to Your Loudon” (1987) TV-G  – A Halloween costume party at the Loudon’s Vermont inn goes hilariously off the rails when the locals suspect that a UFO has landed in town. This excellent episode of the Newhart TV series stars Bob Newhart, Mary Frann, and Peter Scolari. 30min 

2:30 pm The Night That Panicked America (1975) NR  – A recreation of Orson Welles’s infamous 1938 radio broadcast of H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds, and the tumultuous effect it had on people throughout the country. The TV movie stars Vic Morrow, Cliff De Young, Meredith Baxter-Birney, John Ritter, and Will Geer. 1hr 32min

Nov. 7: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) NR – Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) investigate when the heir to an isolated estate in the moors claims that he is being pursued by a giant, supernatural hound. Rathbone is great as the master detective in this fine version of Conan Doyle’s famous tale, which costars John Carradine, Wendy Barrie, and E.E. Clive. 1hr 20min

Nov. 14: Identity Unknown (1945) NR – A WWII soldier emerges from a bombed building in France with amnesia and four dog tags from the soldiers killed alongside him. Back in the U.S. he visits each of the men’s homes in search of his identity. This poignant drama stars Richard Arlen and Cheryl Walker. 1hr 11min

Nov. 21: The Saint Takes Over (1940) NR – When his friend, Police Inspector Fernack, is framed by gangsters, Simon Templar (George Sanders) investigates, in this mystery based on writer Leslie Charteris’s famous character. Wendy Barrie and Jonathan Hale costar under the direction of Jack Hively. 1hr 9min

Dec. 5: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) NR – In 15th-century Paris, a gypsy girl (Maureen O’Hara) becomes the object of obsession by both the city’s ruthless Chief Justice (Cedric Hardwicke) and the hunchbacked bell ringer (Charles Laughton) of Notre Dame cathedral. The film, based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, was directed by William Dieterle. 1hr 56min Watch trailer

Dec. 12: Amélie (2001) R – Audrey Tautou plays a kind-hearted soul who delights in helping other people find happiness. The cathedral of Notre Dame plays a seminal role in this quirky comedy directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. In French with English subtitles. 2hrs 2min    Watch trailer

Dec. 19: The Three Musketeers (2011) PG-13 – D’Artagnan and the three Musketeers unite to defeat Cardinal Richelieu and his nefarious plan to seize the throne of France. This action-packed version of the classic story features fantasy elements, slapstick comedy, and a swordfight atop Notre Dame cathedral. Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, and Milla Jovovich star under the direction of Paul W.S. Anderson. 1hr 50min  Watch trailer

Dec. 26: Midnight in Paris (2011) PG-13 – While vacationing in Paris, a struggling writer (Owen Wilson) discovers that he can time-travel back to the 1920s, where he encounters famous authors and painters. This romantic comedy from director writer Woody Allen is a delightful love letter to the beautiful city of Paris. Notre Dame provides a backdrop in one scene of the film. 1hr 34min  Watch trailer
