Special Event: Communal Quilt Project
June 17 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
🌍 Patchwork quilts have a rich history spanning many centuries and cultures. Generations have transformed discarded fabric remnants into vibrant quilts, each piece telling a family story. In antebellum America, sewing circles—mainly women—gathered to share knowledge, chat, and strategize. FREE and Open to the public – part of Juneteenth Events at Colonial Williamsburg – LEARN MORE
Introducing the Communal Quilt Project, an arts initiative inviting people of all genders, ages, and ethnicities to create a giant quilt together. Through hands-on workshops, we replicate the spirit of traditional sewing circles. Participants will craft faux patchwork quilt sections using simple materials like fabric, glue, and scissors, sharing their stories within a supportive community. 🧵✨
These workshops will take place globally, meeting people “where they are.” We aim to break down superficial barriers and highlight our shared connections. Each year, they’ll display the story-quilts on Duke of Gloucester (DOG) Street as a symbol of unity, gradually creating the “DOG Street Mile Communal Quilt.”
Join us and be part of this incredible journey. Open to the public. 🌐❤️
