Measure of a Man’s Worth
June 1776: For nearly a year, the Rebels have occupied the Governor’s Palace, guarding its treasures as war rages across North America. Benjamin, an enslaved man owned by Mr. Wythe, is sent to deliver a special meal to the Palace Commander. There, he encounters Major James Innes, a childhood acquaintance, who shares startling news—the Fifth Virginia Convention has voted for independence. But what does this transformation mean for Benjamin, Virginia’s enslaved people, and the 57 men and women still bound in servitude at the Palace? Admission to Colonial Williamsburg is required.
