About Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries
Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries is a historian who specializes in the African American experience. His work includes the highly regarded Audible Originals series, Great Figures of the Civil Rights Movement, which explores pivotal individuals in the civil rights era. Dr. Jeffries has contributed to several major public history projects, notably as the lead scholar and primary scriptwriter for the $27 million redesign of the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.
As a passionate advocate for teaching the complex truths of American history, Dr. Jeffries shares his expertise on African American history and contemporary Black politics through public speaking, op-eds, and media appearances. His TEDx Talk, Why We Must Confront the Painful Parts of US History, has inspired over 2 million viewers, and he continues this work as the host of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Hard History podcast.
In addition to his public history contributions, Dr. Jeffries partners with school districts to develop anti-racism programming and culturally responsive curricula. As an award-winning professor at The Ohio State University, he’s recognized for his dedication to challenging students to see history through a new lens. He currently serves as the chair of the Board of Directors of The Montpelier Foundation, which oversees the historic estate of James Madison, architect of the Constitution and fourth U.S. president.
