Governor’s Musick at the Art Museums
In colonial America, music was heavily influenced by British imports, but the Revolutionary War disrupted this connection. Composer James Hewitt, for instance, wrote a battle sonata celebrating the Battle of Trenton, a key victory in securing independence. Join us as we explore this overlooked Classical-era genre and how Hewitt adapted it to forge a distinct American musical identity. Admission to Colonial Williamsburg is required.
