Dining with History: Honoring Dr. Opal Lee
Celebrate the lasting impact of Dr. Opal Lee, known as “The Grandmother of Juneteenth.” A passionate activist and educator, Dr. Lee was instrumental in making Juneteenth a national holiday and continues to champion community, history, and agriculture. Executive Chef Julianne Gutierrez has crafted a menu honoring Dr. Lee’s dedication to nourishment and sustainability. Begin with a fresh, farm-inspired salad, reflecting the community farm she founded at 92. The main course features cornmeal-crusted blue catfish, paying tribute to her Texas roots and the dish named in her honor at Bonton Farms. Finish with a rich heirloom carrot cake, celebrating her commitment to food justice and community empowerment.
