Meet the editors of the latest Colonial Williamsburg publication, The Williamsburg Bray School, Maureen Elgersman Lee,W&M Bray School Lab Director and Nicole Brown, Graduate Assistant.
Maureen Elgersman Lee: As Director of the Bray School Lab, Maureen Elgersman Lee guides research and collaboration with university faculty, external scholars, graduate students, undergraduates and Bray School descendants. A native of Ontario, Canada, Dr. Elgersman Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in French from Redeemer University as well as a master’s degree in African American Studies and a doctoral degree in Humanities with an emphasis on African American Studies, both from Clark Atlanta University. Dr. Elgersman Lee has spent more than two decades teaching the history of African-descended people at universities in Georgia, Maine, and Virginia; she also served as executive director of Richmond’s Black History Museum for five years. Nicole Brown: As the Bray School Lab’s Graduate Assistant, Nicole Brown works directly with the Lab Director and the student volunteers who support the Lab’s research and engagement projects. A Ph.D. candidate in American Studies, Nicole received her MA in American Studies from William & Mary in 2022. She has conducted research trips to the University of Oxford and Lambeth Palace Library to study the topics of religion, education, and slavery in Colonial Virginia, and her ongoing study of the Bray Associates and Black literacy in American history is a primary focus of her current research.
