This Winter edition of Destination Recreation features a wide variety of new adventures to celebrate the cooler temperatures in our beautiful and colorful outdoors! In this issue, adventure awaits you within our scenic parks, 48 miles of trails, and themed programs. They’re also offering special events to make the season festive. See the full brochure here.

2025 Hit the Reset Virtual 5K Run/Walk • All Ages

Jan. 11-March 11 • Various/multiple locations
Register early and save! $20 until 1/31/25 and then $25 until 2/28/25.
It’s time to put 2024 in the past and HIT THE RESET! We are racing into 2025 with positive resolutions—let’s move in a forward direction together! Join James City County Parks & Recreation for their fourth annual virtual 5K! You can complete this virtual 3.1-mile run/walk anywhere, with anyone, at any time. Complete within these dates and submit online. Race registration includes a commemorative medal and shirt. JCC has some of the most beautiful trails in Virginia. If you choose to run your 5K on a County trail, submit your location photo and receive an extra entry into our raffle. Make a mess, make some art and make your mark…in clay! Learn hand-building and explore the potter’s wheel. No experience needed. Before & After School Programs
All REC Connect Before & After School programs are FULL. Any additional completed registration packets received will be added to a waitlist. All registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to space availability. The program, for ages 5-10, operates Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. until school starts and school dismissal until 6 p.m. Registration forms and program information are available for download here or for pickup at any payment site. The program is offered at eight WJCC elementary schools; the James River Elementary School is operated by the Boys/Girls Club, call 757-525-0005 for details. What could be more essential than walking and running? Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing FREE gait analysis. Indoor Cycle 101 • Ages 14+ FREE!

Indoor cycling classes can be overwhelming to jump into – music, seat settings, resistance level and to clip or not to clip. We’re here to help! Proper bike set-up can make or break your class experience and keep you injury-free. Learn all you need to enter the “spin” world. Put things in full gear with our awesome tunes, control over resistance and speed, and overall intensity. No bike experience needed.

Have you ever wanted to try what many call “one of the most efficient forms of exercise?” Have you ever wanted to learn the proper technique of rowing? Now is your chance! Explore James City County parks and trails as you use clues to visit specific park or trail amenities. Visit the James City County Marina to grab your copy of the JCC Parks and Trails Scavenger Hunt beginning Jan. 15. After completing the scavenger hunt, all participants will receive a certificate of completion by visiting the Marina. No registration is required. Celebrate Trails Day | Marathon on the Trails • All Ages

Celebrate Trails Day, held annually on the fourth Saturday of April, encourages Americans to enjoy trails all over the nation. James City County Parks & Recreation invites you to run, walk or bike a marathon distance of 26.2 miles on our local trails by April 26. Register online by April 1 for just $5 to receive a medal, recommended trail routes and full event details. Various parks, facilities, trails and trail surfaces will be recommended to complete this challenge; or you can also forge your own path to reach your 26.2-mile goal on your own trails or blueways! Freedom Park Field Lab • Ages 6+
Freedom Park
Think of this as a field trip for your school, friends or home-school group! This hands-on experience allows kids the opportunity to enhance classroom learning in a natural environment. Each program includes instructors and volunteers to help guide learning in the topics listed below. Reservation requests must be made at least two weeks in advance and depend on staff availability. Program fee is $6 per youth participant (groups of at least five are required) and includes access to the Freedom Park Classroom; large groups of 25 or more will be provided a Freedom Park shelter rental included with their fees. Attention amateur photographers! We’re seeking photographs of park landscapes and scenery, wildlife and of people enjoying our parks. Grab your camera and explore the Greensprings Interpretive Trail, Powhatan Creek Trail, Jamestown Beach Event Park, Powhatan Creek Park and Blueway, and the James City County Marina. Selected photographs will be featured on the County’s website, social media and in the kiosk at the respective park locations.
