Lesser Known Things About Disney

by Whitney Daniels, Magic of Mickey Travel Agent
You’ve probably visited Disney at least once, and if you haven’t I’m sure you’ll be visiting at some point in the future. I myself have visited Walt Disney World® at least 20 times throughout my life and I’m only 23. One of the most exciting things about Disney is that no matter how many times you’ve been there is still something to see and do there that you haven’t done before. Everyone knows about the different exciting rides, the characters to meet and the fantastic shows but there is so much more than just that. In this article I’m going to present you with things to do at Disney that aren’t as well known.
Many wonder if they should take their children at such a young age. The answer is yes. While they may not be able to ride as many of the rides or really understand where they are it can create lasting memories for you and memories that you can later share with them when they get older. Is it time for their first haircut? If so take them to “The Harmony Barber Shop” in Magic Kingdom®. Here kids can get your child’s first haircut and a certificate is given to remember the event. They have also been known at times to give a pair of Mickey ears with “My First Haircut” written on them.
When you visit Walt Disney World® you always ride the buses and the monorails right? Well did you know that the drivers carry cards like baseball cards and if you ask them they’ll give you one!?
Here is a neat thought for the next time you visit The Haunted Mansion®. There is a pet cemetery outside of this ride. It’s located on the left after you exit. If you look very closely at it you will see a headstone for Mr. Toad. What’s the significance? The previous ride there was Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride®. The headstone was added after that ride was shutdown. Pretty neat, right?
At the World Showcase in Epcot® the Japan Pavilion offers the Pick-A-Pearl experience. Here, you get to pick a clam from the tank and they open it in front of you. A small performance gets put on with it, even banging on a drum. The pearl that is found inside your clam you can then have fitted to a piece of jewelry, including Cinderella’s coach. Or you can take the pearl home as is. This activity can also be found at Downtown Disney®.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios® the Animation Academy awaits! Classes are conducted about every 30 minutes. Once you are welcomed into the classroom there are Mickey Mouse desks to sit at, each equipped with a sheet of drawing paper and a pencil, but NO eraser. The Disney instructor will come into the room and then teach you how to draw a Disney character! No character is ever drawn twice in a row, with the exception of Mickey Mouse. The instructor uses an overhead projector to walk you through the steps of drawing the character. And the best part is you get to take your drawing home as a souvenir!
Also located at Disney’s Japan Pavilion in the World Showcase at Epcot® is the candy lady. At certain times of the day she’ll come out and make candy! She normally chooses 2 to 3 children to choose the shape of the candy. This is a really neat experience and something very neat to watch, as this lady is very talented.
When visiting you have to visit the restaurants right? Have you ever eaten something and fell in love? Did you know that if you ask for a recipe to a dish most places would give it to you? Now you can go home and create your own Disney dishes. You can also ask to take home the menu at the restaurants and if they are able to they will let you take it home, a great souvenir.
While visiting Epcot® be sure to visit Club Cool at Innovations Pavilion. This unique experience lets you taste different Coca Cola® products from around the world. You’ll have a great time with your family taste testing the different products. See which one is your favorite!
Walt Disney World® is one of those places that keeps on surprising you. That’s what helps to make each vacation there unique and unforgettable. No mater how many times you’ve been there is still something there that you didn’t do last time. As I said earlier I’ve been to Walt Disney World® over 20 times and there are things on this list that I’ve never done. And this list is just a start to all the unique things that Disney® has to offer.
