The Senate approves the Sunshine Protection Act and just like that… Daylight Savings is permanent…well, almost…

And just like that – it is done (well almost – it still has to be approved by the House and be signed by the President) but it looks like Fall Back and Spring Forward will soon be a thing of the past. And all I can say is, “Thank goodness”.

There is hope that this bipartisan supported Sunshine Protection Act may reduce fatalities. Based on several studies there is an increase in fatal car accidents after we change our clocks. There may also be health issues like heart attacks tied into the stress of time changes.

But on a less deadly note, let’s not forget or brush under the rug more the subtle ways that the time change upends our lives. How about when you have babies or worse, toddlers whose lack of sleep can ruin your day, maybe even your week? Don’t get me started on a teen’s need for sleep and how a teen’s mood can effect an entire household. Or how about you? The adult, who has a job that you are trying to get to in the morning? An hour shift can take days to get over, especially compounded by a household of different ages trying to adjust. And for what? So we can do it all over again in a few months?

Finally, we can now unite and join Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and most of Arizona (including Navajo Indian territories) who have NOT been participating in our Nation’s Daylight Savings Time back and forth. This will all be possible as long as the House and the President agree….and let’s hope they do.

When will Daylight Savings Time become permanent in the United States? Well, if all goes without a hitch, it will become permanent in November 2023. There are industries like the airlines, who needed time to adjust schedules. So then, we will finally be able to stop manually adjusting those wall clocks and old car and stove clocks and heck, our inner clocks. The only thing I will miss about it is the memes, but not that much. Next November, the Daylight Savings Time switch-a-roo will become just a thing of the past, like Betamax and floppy discs.

We might want to mark this day in history though, because Tuesday March 15, 2022 was the day that our divided Senate (truly 50/50 divided) decided to agree UNANIMOUSLY on something. Finally, something that brings us together as a country: sunshine. Well, sunshine…thank you. It is nice to have some agreement in the United States and honestly this one does effect everyone. I mean, we all revolve around the sun every 365 days, 5 hours, and 59 minutes.

So agreement…and no disruptive time changes…

Wait, is it the “Age of Aquarius”? Maybe it will usher in some “harmony and understanding”….we could all use that after the last two years.
