Inspired by JYF’s ongoing special exhibition, “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design,” and in prep for their cosplay costume contest next month, the event features a free interactive cosplay panel and $10 make-and-take workshops to help you perfect your look. 🛠️✨

FREE COSPLAY PANEL DISCUSSION @ 1 P.M. Whether you’re a seasoned cosplayer or just starting out, join their free panel discussion on DIY costumes, makeup, and prop construction. Learn how to create amazing cosplay on a budget and add pizzazz to any outfit! ✨

Our very own Lara Templin, Gallery Experience Supervisor and cosplay enthusiast, will moderate a lively discussion with museum staff and cosplay experts Max Becker, Madi Dickens, Alicia Klimenko, Sarah Raiford, and Jay Templin.

$10 COSPLAY MAKE-AND-TAKE WORKSHOPS @ 2 P.M.

After the panel, dive into hands-on workshops with their panelists to create props and accessories for your costume. $10 per ticket. Space is limited and a reservation is required. Please choose only one of the five workshops. Ages 14 and up.

🖌️🔮Choose from five DIY workshops:

  • Glowing Orb + Silver Claws – Learn how to make a glowing orb and silver claws. At this workshop techniques on how to make claws from folded cardstock and how to use inexpensive everyday items to make props will be demonstrated.
  • Magic Potion Bottle -Learn how to make a magical potion bottle. At this workshop techniques like beading and wax sealing will be demonstrated as you learn how to make your own potion bottle.
  • Costume Armor – Learn how to make armor for your next costume. At this workshop learn how to shape EVA foam and how to attach pieces for ease of movement as you make an armor arm bracer.
  • Small Belt Pouch– Learn how to make a small belt pouch with craft foam. At this workshop techniques like patterning and tricks for assembly will be demonstrated as you learn how to make your own small belt pouch. Techniques learned with the foam can be applied to cloth and leather too.
  • Special Effects Makeup – Learn how to apply special effects makeup. At this workshop techniques like making scars/gills and makeup layering will be demonstrated as you learn how to add makeup effects to your character. You will leave with your own small makeup palette.

Remember, you can only attend one workshop since they all happen simultaneously. Workshops are for ages 14 and up, and space is limited, so reserve your spot now!

History & Cosplay: A Match Made in Imagination

August 10, 2024 • $10 • Jamestown Settlement

Join Jamestown Settlement for another cosplay event – “History & Cosplay: A Match Made in Imagination” on August 10. The Event will feature a presentation by Shasta Schatz, a reception with light hors d’oeuvres and cash bar and a chance to mingle and explore the Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design special exhibition. Guests are encouraged to wear their own costumes and participate in a costume parade and contest with prizes awarded to audience favorites.
