Colonial Williamsburg Volunteer Opportunities for Kids Ages 10-18!

Colonial Williamsburg has opportunities for youth to volunteer as Junior Interpreters. These costumed, year-round positions are limited to children who live in Williamsburg, James City County, and the Bruton District of York County.  Kids will get a chance to volunteer in trade shops (carpenter & joiners shop, millinery, silversmith, wig shop, colonial nursery and foundry).

Younger volunteers are placed in colonial households where they help in the kitchen, do needlepoint, complete household chores, dance and play games; while positions in the trade shops are usually reserved for kids ages 13 and older.

The Colonial Williamsburg Junior Interpreter Expo will have booths with various roles where children and their parents can go from booth to booth and gather information about the roles available.  Parents and kids will be able to fill out an application choose the top two areas of CW that they would like to volunteer.  After the Expo, CW will review the applications and call back likely candidates for interviews, with the final selection to take place around the end of February.

What kind of kid are they looking for?  Colonial Williamsburg is looking for outgoing kids who would enjoy talking to other kids, as well as adults.

While being outgoing is key, a love of history and the ability to think on their feet are also desirable qualities for a Junior Interpreter.

If a child is selected, kids and parents attend an information session, costume fitting, as well as on site training on the weekends.

Orientation and training begins in May, and the Junior Interpreters will begin to volunteer during the summer months.  The average time commitment is about four hours a week, more or less.  Children are welcome to continue to volunteer on Saturdays during the school year, if they so choose.

The Junior Interpreter Expo will take place from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Bruton Heights Education Center (301 1st Street, Williamsburg, VA 23185). Kids must be present the day of the Expo to considered for the program.
