O’Connell is a 2014 winner of the Green Earth Book Award for picture books, a national recognition of authors and illustrators whose books best inspire young readers to appreciate and care for the environment. She is also winner of the 2013 Moonbeam Gold Award for non-fiction – animals. This award brings recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to support childhood literacy and life-long reading.

The Mary Mitchell Speaker Series was created in memory of Mary Anne Mitchell, class of ’85 and former member of the Swem Library Board of Directors. Mitchell’s passion for education prompted her board colleagues to begin a fund to support author and scholar presentations.
