Campus Kitchen Fundraising Challenge – February 2014

From February 21-28, the College of William & Mary’s Campus Kitchen is competing against other Campus Kitchens across the country in the Raise the Dough Challenge to help raise money and awareness. The school that raises the most money will receive $1000 to go toward their efforts.

The William & Mary program is an affiliate of The Campus Kitchens Project, a national volunteer organization with 34 chapters. Their mission is to use existing resources to meet hunger and nutritional needs in our community by:

  • Recovering surplus food from vendors
  • Using donated kitchen space at the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church to make nutritious meals and
  • Delivering these meals right to the doors of their clients in all four of the low-income subsidized housing complexes in the City of Williamsburg.  That’s about 200 clients each week, which amounts to almost 10,000 meals per year.

In addition, they run a weekly program called Fun at Five. Volunteers spend time with the children in two of the neighborhoods that receive meals. Ages range from 4-16 years old, and activities include football, soccer, drawing, hide & seek, and more.

Their mentor program provides more personal, one-on-one connections between W&M students and children from the Fun at Five neighborhoods. Mentors serve as role models, tutors, and friends to the children.

You can learn more about the contest and William & Mary’s Campus Kitchen on Razoo.com.  There’s  an online raffle for a chance to win prizes from City of Williamsburg businesses, such as The Trellis, Extraordinary Cupcakes and Aromas. They’re also having a profit-share with Aromas on Wednesday, February 26, from 4-10pm. On this night, 10% of every purchase accompanied by a fundraiser coupon will be donated to The Campus Kitchen.
