Substance addiction impacts both the user and their immediate family. These impacts cause harm to finances, physical health, and psychological well-being. While the severity of addiction varies between family to family, there are almost always negative outcomes. My Name is Erin, and My Mom’s an Addict provides a captivating fictional story about Erin, a fifteen-year old girl, who is raised by her grandparents because of her mom’s heroin addiction.
Having lived with her grandparents since she was five years old, Erin tries her best to live a normal life; she balances school, friends, boys, and abandonment issues. When her mom reappears, Erin must learn she is not the cause of her mom’s disappearance or addiction.
My Name is Erin, and My Mom’s an Addict helps readers identify with Erin, a protagonist that is conflicted with letting her mother back into her life, and helps readers become a support system for individuals like Erin. The narration mixes humor with anger and pain, creating a relatable and heartfelt story as she shares the effects of addiction. My Name is Erin, and My Mom’s an Addict suggests that children of addicts are not defined by their parent’s illness, and that the past does not control the future. Amy Voltaire writes a compelling young adult novel, starting a conversation about a topic that is usually set aside and ignored.
