William & Mary Theatre Presents Men on Boats

The first production of the year is Men on Boats, October 3-6, 2024. From Dramatists Play Service: “Ten explorers. Four boats. One Grand Canyon. Afrofuturist Afternoon & Symbolism and Storytelling with Ruth E. Carter: Hands-on Crafts

Jamestown Settlement on Saturday, October 5
Visit Jamestown Settlement on Saturday, October 5, to explore the “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design” special exhibition. Enjoy drop-in, hands-on programs that focus on fiber art and crafts inspired by Ruth E. Carter’s costume designs, with all materials provided. Activities include fabric dyeing and zine making. While touring the museum galleries, stop by pop-up history stations to learn about African artifacts and view reproductions. After the craft sessions, join a gallery talk led by Harvey Bakari, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s curator of African History and Culture. All activities are included with museum admission. Residents of James City County, York County, and Williamsburg, including William & Mary students, receive free admission with proof of residency. The first half is free with admission to the museum and takes place from 10 am – 2 pm in Presentation Hall. The second half is in the afternoon and does require a ticket purchase ($15 for students with provision of school name & student ID number, $25 for everyone else).

Julian E. Zelizer is the Malcolm Stevenson Forbes, Class of 1941 Professor of History and Public Affairs at Princeton University, a New York Times best-selling author, CNN political analyst and a regular guest on NPR’s “Here and Now.” His latest book is “Myth America.”

Victory at Yorktown 243rd Anniversary Celebration

Saturday, October 19 from 9 am – 5 pm
The 243rd anniversary of America’s momentous 1781 Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown will be celebrated at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown with artillery firings, military programs and music. Visitors can interact with Revolutionary War re-enactors and take part in interpretive demonstrations. On Yorktown Day, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown offers free admission to active duty, reserve and retired military personnel and up to three direct family members with military identification. Jamestown Settlement on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26
“Family Frights,” a Halloween-theme, “must-do” museum night for the entire family, returns to Jamestown Settlement on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26. Ghosts and graveyards will greet families from the main entrance into a “Sleepy Hollow” themed lobby to the outdoor areas, where they will pass by opportunities for facepainting, and on to “Alice in Wonderland” for fun and games! The riverfront will be transformed into elements of Greek mythology, costume-clad guests will encounter Poseidon, Athena and other gods and goddesses. Power-up with the “Mario Brothers” by climbing aboard the Godspeed or discover “Thing 1” or “Thing 2” with “Dr. Seuss” on board the Discovery. Trick-or-treating, ghostly tales and grisly games will be among the festivities available at 6-7:30 p.m. and 8-9 p.m. on both dates. Tickets must be purchased online, tickets not sold at the door. VLM Night of the Living Museum

Virginia Living Museum on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26 from 5:30-8:30pm
This is a non-scary Halloween event for families with kids ages 12 and under. Come dressed as your favorite character or wild animal. Trick-or-treat throughout the museum as you walk through themed galleries filled with characters and themed decorations! Make creepy crafts and play Halloween games. Live animal shows featuring fierce and not-so-fierce Halloween critters. Take a nighttime hike along the outdoor boardwalk and see the Dinosaur Discovery Trail by night! And, back by popular demand, is the beloved “Not the Mythbusters Science Show”, in the Amphitheater! VLM’s Night of the Living Museum’s advance tickets are $12 for members/$17 for non-members. All-access passes are $15 for members/$23 for non-members and include the Fright Lights laser show.  Each party must include one adult 18 years or older. Ticket prices for each weekend increase that Friday to $15 ($18 all-access) for members / $20 ($26 all-access) for non-members. Children ages 2 and under are free but require a free ticket.

This awesome market has a pet parade (costumes…YES!) a spot on the waterfront where you can get your pet portrait or family picture with the pet – it is free! There is a wonderful market that day and many activities for the whole family. You don’t want to miss this themed market.


Precarious Beer’s Field Dayz

Lawn of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg on October 26 from 4 pm – 8 pm
6th annual Field Dayz is all about the boos and the brews, celebrate spooky season alongside some favorite craft breweries. Tickets go on sale September 1 A portion of every ticket sold, in addition to event raffle tickets, will benefit the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD)! Colonial Williamsburg, Nightly, October 1 -31 from 7 – 8 pm or 8:30 – 9:30 pm
Hopefully you’ve walked through the beautiful streets and buildings of Colonial Williamsburg (if you haven’t add that to your list). Try walking through CW at night with a ghost teller relaying authentic ghost stories from the 1700s. And perhaps they may mention a few creepy recent encounters too. Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design Exhibition

Jamestown Settlement from May 1, 2024 – January 5, 2025
A new special exhibition is opened May 11 at Jamestown Settlement, featuring the works of two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter. Carter has created powerful pieces for acclaimed films and television such as “Yellowstone,” “Roots,” “Amistad,” “Malcom X,” “Selma,” “Do the Right Thing” and “Black Panther.” The special exhibition also showcases the work of Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation historical tailors who dress interpreters depicting people living in early America, some based on period portraits and surviving garments on display in the museum’s gallery exhibits.

The traveling exhibit, organized by Ruth Carter Costume Design and curated by Julia Long, will be on display for six months through January 5th, 2025. This exhibit is part of admission. Learn more.
