How to avoid green hair this summer at the pool – and other great tips
Fun in the Sun: Summer Hair Tips
Inflate the beach balls, load the cooler and buckle the kids in the car, it’s summer time! Just remember that the sun, wind and water can take a toll on your children’s lovely locks. We’ve all seen the unfortunate kids at the pool with the green hair! The experts at Pigtails & Crewcuts shared the following hair tips for summer to keep the green out and the shine in.
Keep the Green OUT!
Soak then swim or wear a cap. Take a tip from professional swimmers and get your hair wet in the shower before diving in the pool. Hair acts like a sponge when it takes on water. If it’s already wet, it will absorb fewer pool chemicals. There are also pre-swim conditioners that can be used if you are not close to a shower. Swim caps will also help protect the hair – if your kids don’t like putting them on, add a little baby powder in the cap and it will slip right on.
Wash after every swim. Chlorine has a way of turning even the prettiest hair green and straw-like. Chlorine is a mineral that is deposited in the hair and can build up over the summer, making it near impossible to get out over time. There are a lot of gentle, daily clarifying shampoos that work great. It is best to wash out the chlorine each time you swim. Our own Pigtails & Crewcuts signature Summertime Scrub is a great product to keep the green out!
My hair IS GREEN! Did the summer get away from you? Is your lovely blonde now neon green? Don’t worry – we can still get it out. It will take a clarifying treatment in the salon that takes about 30 min to complete. Home remedies such as hydrogen peroxide or baking soda will dry out the hair and potentially damage the hair.
Keep that hair healthy!
Trim early and often. Dry and dead ends will become even more unruly—and unsightly—when exposed to sun and chlorine. Beat the heat with a trim and schedule regular appointments throughout the summer to keep hair looking healthy.
Shampoo gently. Go easy on your hair! Find a shampoo that’s free of sulfates and detergents. Your natural oils are important, and the chemicals in some shampoos can strip those oils away. Talk to your Pigtails & Crewcuts stylist about what shampoo is best for your hair.
Detangler detour. Pools and beaches are a surefire way to a head full of tangles. Use a detangler before you brush so that you’re not ripping through a head full of knots. Tying hair back and braiding will also protect from damage. Pigtails & Crewcuts has a lot of accessories that are water resistant that will help tame even the most unruly hair.
Condition yourself. Sun, wind, water—they can all wick the moisture right out of your hair. Be sure and condition consistently to give your hair what it needs all summer long to truly shine. Talk with your stylist at Pigtails & Crewcuts for recommendations on a good conditioner for you.
Watch that scalp. Often we lather on the sunscreen on the arms, legs, torso and the cute little noses – but we forget about the scalp. Don’t forget to use sunscreen on parts and areas exposed to the sun. The scalp is very sensitive to the sun.
