Archaeological Volunteer Opportunity

“Dig into history” at New Quarter Park

Volunteer now for archeological dig set for April 15 and 16

Join professional archaeologists and “dig into history” at York County’s New Quarter Park on April 15 and 16. Up to 20 volunteers can participate in each of the four sessions with volunteer opportunities available in the morning or afternoon on each day. No previous experience with archaeological digs is needed. To volunteer, please send an e-mail to Fairfield@FairfieldFoundation.org.

Archaeologists have been excavating the site at the park that was an eighteenth-century slave quarter attached to Carter’s Grove Plantation for several years. The April dig will be a follow-up to the very successful digs in 2013 and 2014 that produced a rich treasure of artifacts. The April dig promises more of the same.

The New Quarter dig is sponsored by Tidewater Virginia Historical Society, the Archeological Society of Virginia, and York County. Professional archaeologists from the Fairfield Foundation as well as certified archaeology volunteers are studying the site and will provide information about earlier discoveries and will instruct volunteers.

New Quarter Park is located at 1000 Lakeshead Drive. From the Colonial Parkway, take the Queens Lake exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp and then turn at the first street which is Lakeshead Drive. Follow Lakeshead for approximately two miles straight into the park to the office and parking lot at the end of the road.
