Dr. Newby-Alexander is Professor of History, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Director of the Joseph Jenkins Roberts Center for the African Diaspora at Norfolk State University. Based on her book of the same title, she charts the remarkable history of the Hampton Roads African American community from the Civil War to Reconstruction. Some of her works will be available for signing and sale after the lecture, among them her most recent book “Virginia Waterways and the Underground Railroad”.
