Pablum Irvin, Pre-K Teacher at The Goddard School is Teacher of the Month – December 2103
Congrats to Mrs. Pablum Irvin (Mrs. Pebbles), Pre-K teacher at The Goddard School. She was voted Williamsburg’s Choice Teacher of the Month for Dec 2013. Mrs. Pebbles is pictured receiving her store gift card from School Crossing’s owner Sherry Phipps.
1. How long have you been teaching and teaching at The Goddard School?
My name is Pablum, however, everyone calls me Mrs. Pebbles and I am the lead teacher in one of the Pre-Kindergarten classrooms at The Goddard School. I have worked with children for over 16 years and I still love it today as much as I did 16 years ago. I have an Associate’s degree in Arts (Elementary, Middle, and Special Education). I have been teaching at The Goddard School since the doors opened on June 3, 2009.
2. What drew you to teaching, teaching at The Goddard School and was there any particular reason you chose to teach PreK?
I knew I wanted to be a teacher at a young age. There was an eight year difference between me and my brother. While playing I would be the teacher and he would be the student and I was excited when I was able to teach him and he was actually learning. In my teen years I would work in childcare jobs during my summers and while stationed in Hawaii as an adult I opened my own home daycare.
3. What perspective have you gained from being around children daily?
I have learned that children are human just like the rest of us, only smaller. They look for and need the same things we do as adults: love, to be nurtured and attention.
4. What do you want your children to be able to do when they leave your classroom – that you know will prepare them for further education and life in general?.
When children leave my classroom I want them to have the self-confidence to achieve what they want. I want them to know and believe in themselves and know that they can achieve everything they set out to do. I cannot do it should not be part of their vocabulary.
5. If you could ask parents to do one thing to help their children’s academic success what would it be?
The best thing parents can do to support their child’s academic success is to get involved. It can be simple things like reading at home or supporting their hobbies or interests.
6. Are you from Williamsburg? If not, where are you from, what brought you here?
I am not a Williamsburg native but originally from Chicago, Illinois. My husband is military and we have been stationed in this area since 2009.
Thank you Ms. Pebbles and Congrats again!
