2016-2017 York County Youth Commission Application Date Extended Until March 31
The York County Board of Supervisors is seeking teens interested in serving on the 2016-2017 York County Youth Commission (YCYC) – a 15-member student-led group that represents youth interests and concerns. Applicants must be York County residents currently enrolled in grades 8-11 in a public, private, or homeschool. The completed application form, a short essay explaining why the student would like to serve on the YCYC, and a letter of recommendation are due at the York County Parks, Recreation and Tourism office by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016
The Youth Commission’s primary goal is to serve as a link between the Board and the county’s youth by representing youth related needs and issues. Members conduct student surveys, report findings to the Supervisors and to the School Board, conduct annual Town Hall meetings in the high schools, perform community service, learn about county government, help sponsor countywide high school social events and build leadership skills.
Application forms and complete program details are available on the Youth Commission’s website at www.ycyc.info. A student video discussing service on the commission can be viewed from this website. Application forms are also available at the Yorktown and Tabb Libraries, the Williamsburg and James City County Libraries, the Victory Family YMCA, and at the York County Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) office located in the York County Operations Center at 100 County Drive, Yorktown, 23692. After reviewing the applications, the Board of Supervisors will appoint up to three teens from each of the county’s five voting districts. The new Youth Commission will be formally introduced at a Board of Supervisors’ meeting this June.
