17th Century Spanish Galleon Replica Set to Visit York County’s Riverwalk Landing November 2-8
El Galeón, the authentic replica of the 17th century Spanish Galleon, visits the shores of the York River for a seven day visit to the Riverwalk Landing piers in historic Yorktown from Wednesday, November 2, through Tuesday, November 8. El Galeón is the first Class A ship to make a port of call to Yorktown since the docks were built in 2005. A Class A ship is defined as a “square-rigged vessel (barque, barquentine, brig, brigantine or ship rigged) and all other vessels more than 40 meters Length Overall (LOA).”
The ship will dock in Yorktown at the Riverwalk Landing piers. The ship’s scheduled arrival time is 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2. She will be escorted to the piers by Yorktown’s home-ported ship, the Schooner Alliance. While she is docked in Yorktown, El Galeón will offer free public deck tours on November 3, 4, and 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paid deck tours are offered November 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a rate of $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12, and free for children 4 and under. El Galeón is a replica of the type of vessel used by the Spanish Crown for maritime expeditions from the 16th to 18th centuries with the intent of discovering and establishing trade routes between Spain, America and the Philippine. Built during 2009 to 2010 by the Nao Victoria Foundation, the ship has covered more than 35,000 nautical miles between 2010 to 2013 along the world’s largest seas and oceans, visiting ports in four continents and participating in many cultural projects. El Galeón is a 500 ton galleon, with length over-all 164 ft. and beam 33 ft. Three masts hold seven sails which measure almost 10,000 square feet. This replica of a majestic Spanish galleon beautifully captures and represents their culture, thus becoming an extraordinary attraction in each and every port it visits. Converted into a floating museum, the vessel is a highly attractive ship including five of the six decks available to tour offering multiple spaces, resources and exhibition infrastructure of immense versatility to host events, presentations, exhibitions, etc. It is fully equipped with the latest technology.
Coordinate your visit to tour El Galeón with other activities in historic Yorktown including live music at Water Street Grille Friday and Saturday, November 4 and 5, as well as the start of the Williamsburg Harvest Celebration featuring over 30 culinary inspired events hosted in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.
